![]() Will, a violinist, artist, designer and founder of the Columbus Orchestral Society (who Prinz cites as establishing Mahogany's organizational tabula rasa), and his grandfather Vernon A. Mahogany are the brainchild of Andrew Prinz, created as a response borne of multidisciplinary generational precedent initiated by Prinz's great-grandfather Harry S. They have performed live with Vampire Weekend, Spoon, Chairlift, Clinic, Bloc Party, Serena Maneesh, Interpol, Luna, Broadcast, Resplandor, and others, maintaining a cult status among the group's listeners. Mahogany have released two critically acclaimed full-length albums, The Dream of the Modern Day (2000) and Connectivity! (2006), as well as numerous singles, EPs and compilation tracks collected on Memory Column: Early Works and Rarities 1996-2004 (2005). Mahogany also use film, video, animation, cinema, graphic design, photography, typography and other realization and rendering techniques for a cumulative effect that the band refers to as the "Hypercube". The band's sound combines vocals, cello, massed guitars, pianos, melodicas, sequencers, synthesizers, samplers, tape, percussion, and other instruments. Mahogany are an electric music-based multidisciplinary media ensemble formed in Michigan in 1995 and currently working in Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago, and other locations. Cayetana make the kind of chirpy, energized indie rock you’ll want to dance to or run to. Cayetana’s excellent sophomore album, New Kind of Normal, was the first to debut on the label in the spring of last year. They released their debut record, Nervous Like Me, back in 2014 before opting to start their own label, Plum Records, a few years later, a decision that was “born out of our realization that we thrive when we trust our instincts, and take decision-making and creative control into our own hands,” per their website. Philly rock trio Cayetana have been on the circuit for a while, but they’re still worth mentioning as one of the most influential indie groups to come out of the city in recent years. Philadelphia is famously the birthplace of groups like The Roots and Hall & Oates, but today it’s renowned for its live music scene, which, from the looks of it, is extremely healthy. Philly, though it boasts strong ties to punk and R&B, welcomes exports from all over the country across genres who move to the city for its thriving music community. It comes as no surprise that the music scene in “The City of Brotherly Love” is inclusive, tight-knit and diverse.
